Proper aftercare is the key to keeping your new piercing healthy, beautiful, and free from infection. Whether it’s your lobe, helix, nose, or navel, cleaning your piercing correctly helps avoid irritation and supports faster healing.
1. Use a Saline Solution — Not Alcohol
A sterile saline solution is your best friend. Avoid alcohol or hydrogen peroxide — they’re too harsh and can dry out the healing skin. Either buy a premade saline or mix 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt with 1 cup of warm distilled water.
2. Wash Your Hands First
Always clean your hands thoroughly before touching your piercing. Dirty hands are the #1 cause of infection.
3. Clean Gently Twice a Day
Dip a clean cotton pad into saline and gently press around the piercing site. Do not rotate the jewelry. Cleaning more than twice a day can irritate your skin and delay healing.
4. Avoid Soap and Creams Around the Piercing
Harsh soaps, scented products, and antibacterial creams can cause more harm than good. Let your body do the healing — your job is just to keep the area clean and protected.
5. Don’t Pick or Twist
Crusties are normal! Don’t pick at them. Gently clean with saline, and they’ll fall away naturally. Twisting jewelry can damage tissue and trap bacteria inside.
6. Listen to Your Body
If you notice redness, swelling, or unusual discharge beyond the first few days, consult your piercer or a medical professional. Early action prevents bigger problems.
Your piercing deserves gentle care and patience. Follow these steps, and you’ll be well on your way to a beautifully healed result.
